User Interaction and Cloud Implementation of Healthcare System
Question: Tele-health can reduce socioeconomic demands by reducing travelling for face-to-face visits. Technology can be successfully applied in community-based patient care to enhance the capacity of nurses to deliver medications management for clients, resulting in increased efficiency of service delivery as well as staff and patient satisfaction. Tele-health in patients homes supplements delivery of care, can reduce unplanned medical visits and improve self-management of an illness. Remote healthcare can supplement the delivery of care, providing support to clients and healthcare staff. For this project we are using the Tunstall tele-health monitoring equipment as an example of the type ofequipment that is used. See the series of 2 minute videos on the following site to see what their current Technology looks like for tablet interaction with older people: The aim of the project is to improve the tablet computer interaction for the end-user of tele-health hardware and software in the homes of older people living in the community. We will assume that the community-dwelling older people live in regional, rural and remote locations in the central west of NSW. The solution involves a cloud-based mobile application, although you might also identify other possible delivery methods for the interaction. You need to create a Project Vision Document which contains: Problem Capabilities Benefits Specific analysis techniques have not been taught yet, so this assignment does not require technical descriptions. Answer: Introduction The project focuses on enhancing the computer interaction for the healthcare software and hardware. Cloud Implementers The expert's technicians, engineers for implementing cloud facility; The cloud implementers have the responsible for integrating the cloud technology in the system for easy accessing the system from remote and rural places (Grefen, Pernici, Snchez, 2012, p-56). Project Shareholders The owner of the project, the owner of the health cares service provider The project shareholders are responsible for the approving the project implementation, funding the development and cloud implementation (Ball, Weaver, Kiel, 2013, p-92). User Environment The stakeholders are going to develop the product for the elderly persons living in a remote community of the New South Wales. The people have a limited technological knowledge and require easy interface for the online healthcare system. The team requires improving the interface of the system so that the patients can easily utilize the system for inputting the medical information (Galianoà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã Castillo et al., 2016, p-98). There needs to be an option for voice input so that the user can easily input the information like weight, blood pressure, etc. The healthcare system will be developed for the elderly people living in the remote and rural area of the New South Wales. The project team comprises of ten members, project manager and cloud implementation expert for the development of the system. The number of people involved in the project is constant (Longest Jr Darr, 2014). The project manager has allocated the time to each activity in the project. In addition to that, the project manager has endured the timely execution of each activity in the project as allocated the schedule. The system is developed focusing on the people of New South Wales for easier and remote access to healthcare solutions. The current healthcare assistance systems are based on Windows platform only (Breen et al., 2015, p-511). The project aims at developing a platform-independent system for accessing healthcare services from both personal computers and mobile devices. The developed system will provide, long-term health care monitoring and control, provid e online healthcare meeting with medical experts, provide medical suggestions and solutions, schedule meeting with doctors and controlling and monitoring the health condition of the patients. Product Overview Product Perspective The developed application for the mobile healthcare assistance is dependent on the cloud technology, healthcare experts, and healthcare servers. The elderly patients input their medical information through the application that is being saved in the cloud and sent the server for analysis. The data are then fetched from the remote server and cloud server for providing a solution to the patients through their mobile devices. Figure 1: Block Diagram of the Health Care System (Created by Author) Assumptions and Dependencies The assumptions for the system are: The devices accessing the healthcare system are connected to the internet; The user is already registered with the system; Needs and Features The functional requirements and feature of the new cloud based telehealth application are: Secure database: The database stores and retrieves the user data for constant monitoring of the patients; Cloud Infrastructure: The cloud implementation will allow device and platform independent access to the developed system (Tsai, 2014, p-381); Real-Time Monitoring: The system will use the data and information given by the users and provide observations of the improvement of the patients health. The inclusion of the functional requirement will help in improving the functionality and efficiency of the developed system and provide the elderly people living in remote places with efficient healthcare assistance. Need Priority Features Planned Release Mobile application High The system will be accessed from any mobile devices connected to the internet. 1st December 2016 Provide Data Storage Facility High The patients will able to store their data, information and medical histories stored in the system. 1st December 2016 Video Conferencing Medium This feature will allow the patients to directly communicate through video conference with the doctors. 1st January 2017 Alternatives and Competition The Tunstall e-health system is one of the major competitors to the developed system having established e-health services. The Tunstall telehealth system provides video conferencing and long-term monitoring of the patients. Tunstall has aimed their services to the elderly that provided scheduling a one-to-one video session with the medical experts (Liu et al., 2013, p-1470). Tunstall has developed it to get medical assistance from their residence without the need of visiting the hospitals. The competitors product has devices attached to the tablets for reading medical conditions that monitor the health, video conferencing features to the doctors. From the business point of view, the online medical assistance eliminated the need for visiting the doctor and allowed the users to users to monitor their health for a long time. Although providing online assistance is the significant strength of the telehealth, the main disadvantage in term of business is the lack in the easy user interface. Since the telehealth is aimed for the elderly, there is a scope of enhancing the user interface of the system. There are various existing healthcare systems like tele-health exist in the market that gives tough competition to the use of the developed system (Pearlson, Saunders, Galletta, 2016). The significant strength of the developed system is the use of cloud computing that provides access to the system from any mobile devices. Other Product Requirements The non-functional requirements and their features of the new system are: User personalization: The user will be able to create profile and save medical information for long time monitoring of the persons health (Nazneen et al., p-59) ; Content Aggregation: The new e-health system will be developed within a single page with easy of navigation and having all the services integrated into a singular module; Ease of Use: The e-health system will be developed for the elderly people, who have limited knowledge about the technology; Support for various service modules: The e-health support system real-time monitoring and medical assistance. The new system will have video conferencing modules integrated for immediate medical assistance and feedback. The requirement for the system will be developed within a time limit of one year. The developed system will provide easy user accessibility and help in gaining more customers to the system. The new developed system will allow the user to access the system form any device and location that provides a market advantage to the stakeholders. The developed system is operation system independent and can be accessed from any platform and any devices. The user needs first to register through the application and log in to his account every time he wants a medical assistance. The system is dependent on the internet access. The system will also provide online help assistance for using the application for the first time. References Abdelhak, M., Grostick, S., Hanken, M. A. Tariffs on Imports free essay sample
In simplest terms, a tariff is a tax. It adds to the cost of imported goods and is one of several trade policies that a country can enact. Tariffs are often created to protect infant industries and developing economies, but are also used by more advanced economies with developed industries. Here are five of the top reasons tariffs are used: Protecting Domestic Employment The levying of tariffs is often highly politicized. The possibility of increased competition from imported goods can threaten domestic industries. These domestic companies may fire workers or shift production abroad to cut costs, which means higher unemployment and a less happy electorate. The unemployment argument often shifts to domestic industries complaining about cheap foreign labor, and how poor working conditions and lack of regulation allow foreign companies to produce goods more cheaply. In economics, however, countries will continue to produce goods until they no longer have a comparative advantage (not to be confused with an absolute advantage). We will write a custom essay sample on Tariffs on Imports or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Protecting Consumers A government may levy a tariff on products that it feels could endanger its population. For example, South Korea may place a tariff on imported beef room the United States if it thinks that the goods could be tainted with disease. Infant Industries The use of tariffs to protect infant industries can be seen by the Import Substitution Industrialization (SIS) strategy employed by many developing nations. The government of a developing economy will levy tariffs on imported goods in industries in which it wants to foster growth. This increases the prices of imported goods and creates a domestic market for domestically produced goods, while protecting those industries from being forced out by more competitive pricing. It decreases unemployment and allows developing countries to shift from agricultural products to finished goods. Criticisms of this sort of protectionist strategy revolve around the cost of us besieging the development of infant industries. If an industry develops without competition, it could wind up producing lower quality goods, and the subsidies required to keep the state-backed industry afloat could sap economic growth.National Security Barriers are also employed by developed countries to protect certain industries that are deemed strategically important, such as those supporting national security. Defense industries are often viewed as vital to state interests, and often enjoy significant levels of protection. For example, while both Western Europe and the United States are industrialized, both are very protective of defense-oriented companies. Retaliation Countries may also set tariffs as a retaliation technique if they think that a trading partner has not played by the rules . For example, if France believes that the United States has allowed its wine producers to call its domestically produced sparkling wines Champagne (a name specific to the Champagne region of F-range) for too long it may levy a tariff on imported meat from the United States. If the U. S. Agrees to crack down on the improper labeling, France is likely to stop its retaliation. Retaliation can also be employed if a trading partner goes against the governments foreign policy objectives.Types of Tariffs and Trade Barriers There are several types of tariffs and barriers that a government can employ: Specific tariffs Ad valor tariffs Licenses Import quotas Voluntary export restraints Local content requirements Specific Tariffs A fixed fee levied on one unit of an imported good is referred to as a specific tariff. This tariff can vary according to the type Of good imported. For example, a country could levy a $1 5 tariff on each pair of shoes imported, but levy a $300 tariff on each computer imported.Ad Valor Tariffs The phrase ad valor is Latin for according to value, and this type vitrify is levied on a good based on a percentage of that goods value. An example of an ad valor tariff would be a 15% tariff levied by Japan on U. S. Automobiles. The is a price increase on the value of the automobile, so a $1 0,000 vehicle now costs $1 1,500 to Japanese consumers. This price increase protects domestic producers from being undercut, but also keeps prices artificially high for Japanese car shoppers. Non-tariff barriers to trade include: A license is granted to a business by the government, and allows the business to import a certain type of good into the country. For example, there could be a restriction on imported cheese, and licenses would be granted to certain companies allowing them to act as importers. This creates a restriction on competition, and increases prices faced by consumers. Import Quotas An import quota is a restriction placed on the amount of a particular good that can be imported. This sort of barrier is often associated with the issuance of licenses. For example, a country may place a quota on the volume of imported citrus fruit that is allowed. Voluntary Export Restraints (EVER) This type of trade barrier is voluntary in that it is created by the exporting country rather than the importing one. A voluntary export restraint is usually levied at the behest of the importing country, and could be accompanied by a reciprocal EVER. For example, Brazil could place a EVER on the exportation of sugar to Canada, based on a request by Canada. Canada could then place a EVER on the exportation of coal to Brazil. This increases the price of both coal and sugar, but protects the domestic industries. Local Content Requirement Instead of placing a quota on the number of goods that can be imported, the government can require that a certain percentage of a good be made domestically. The restriction can be a percentage of the good itself, or a percentage of the value of the good. For example, a restriction on the import of computers might say that 25% of the pieces used to make the computer are made domestically, or can say that 15% of the value of the good must come from domestically produced components. In the final section well examine who benefits from tariffs and how they affect the price of goods. Who Benefits? The benefits of tariffs are uneven. Because a tariff is a tax, the government will see increased revenue as imports enter the domestic market. Domestic industries also benefit from a reduction in competition, since import prices are artificially inflated. Unfortunately for consumers both individual consumers and businesses higher import prices mean higher prices for goods. If the price of steel is inflated due to tariffs, individual consumers pay more for products using steel, and businesses pay more for steel that they use to make goods. In short, tariffs and trade barriers tend to be pro- reducer and anti-consumer. The effect of tariffs and trade barriers on businesses, consumers and the government shifts over time. In the short run, higher prices for goods can reduce consumption by individual consumers and by businesses. During this time period, businesses will profit and the government will see an increase in revenue from duties. In the long term, businesses may see a decline in efficiency due to a lack of competition, and may also see a reduction in profits due to the emergence of substitutes for their products. For the government, the long-term effect of subsidies is an increase in the demand for public arrives, since increased prices, especially in foodstuffs, leave less disposable income. (For related reading, check out In Praise Of Trade Deficits. ) How Do Tariffs Affect Prices? Tariffs increase the prices of imported goods. Because of this, domestic producers are not forced to reduce their prices from increased competition, and domestic consumers are left paying higher prices as a result. Tariffs also reduce efficiencies by allowing companies that would not exist in a more competitive market to remain open. Figure 1 illustrates the effects of world trade without the presence of a tariff. In the graph, DOS means domestic supply and AD means domestic demand. The price of goods at home is found at price P, while the world price is found at P*.At a lower price, domestic consumers will consume Growth of goods, but because the home country can only produce up to Q, it must import Q- Q worth of goods. Figure 1. Price without the influence Of a tariff When a tariff or other price-increasing policy is put in place, the effect is to increase prices and limit the volume of imports. In Figure 2, price increases from the non-tariff P* to P. Because price has increased, more domestic impasses are willing to produce the good, so Q moves right. This also shifts Q left. The overall effect is a reduction in imports, increased domestic production and higher consumer prices. (To learn more about the movement of equilibrium due to changes in supply and demand, read Understanding Supply-Side Economics. ) Figure 2. Price under the effects of a tariff Tariffs and Modern Trade The role tariffs play in international trade has declined in modern times. One of the primary reasons for the decline is the introduction of international organizations designed to improve free trade, such as the World Trade Organization (WTFO).Such organizations make it more difficult for a country to levy tariffs and taxes on imported goods, and can reduce the likelihood of retaliatory taxes. Because of this, countries have shifted to non-tariff barriers, such as quotas and export restraints. Organizations like the WTFO attempt to reduce production and consumption distortions created by tariffs. These distortions are the result of domestic producers making goods due to inflated prices, and consumers purchasing fewer goods because prices have increased. (To learn about the Wets efforts, read What Is The World Trade Organization? )Since the sass, many developed countries have reduced tariffs and trade barriers, which has i mproved global integration and brought about globalization. Multilateral agreements between governments increase the likelihood of tariff reduction, while enforcement on binding agreements reduces uncertainty. The Bottom Line Free trade benefits consumers through increased choice and reduced prices, but because the global economy brings with it uncertainty, many governments impose tariffs and other trade barriers to protect industry. There is a delicate balance between the pursuit of efficiencies and the governments need to ensure low unemployment.

TNA Essays
TNA Essays TNA Essay TNA Essay TNA Introduction TNA is a process of gathering and interpreting data for identifying performance problems and suggesting solutions. ?Training needs analysis is a critical part of the training process. The TNA objective is twofold: to collect and evaluate information in order to find out what is being done now and what should be done now and later. We have no set procedure for performing a TNA, but the activities fall into three Stages (surveillance, investigation, analysis) and end with a report. The TNA concept provokes some problems within the organization, and the person sponsoring a TNA must cope with these.? (Smith Delahaye, 1998 p. 79) The fictive case scenario presented in this assignment will take place at The Slabrock Nightclub in Skien, Norway, where I actually used to work as the security manager. Some trendy nightclubs in Skien have been forced to close its doors because of failing to control crime on the premises. As a well-repudiated security consultant, I get a call from Slabrock Nightclub which have received multiple warning letters from the local authorities, threatening to revoke the club?s liquor license and operating permit. Erik A Man Filled With Desires... essays
Erik A Man Filled With Desires... essays God bestows you with a variety of gifts. He gives you what He decides to give you and takes away from you what He decides. For Erik Weihenmayer sight was what God took away from him. Erik was a blind man because God wanted him to be so. It was his fate to be blind. He knew that whatever he did cannot be undone. So he accepted his fate and fought to improve his destiny. He was not blind. He could see the truth. Bestowed with the gift of rigid will, Erik was a man filled with desires. He had the desire to be the best, to have the best family, and to conquer the best mountains. To become the best, Erik trained the best he could. He overcame many obstacles in life, married the woman of his dreams, and climbed the towering peaks of Kilimanjaro in Africa. However, his lifes dream had yet to be fulfilled; he had yet to defeat Mount Everest. By climbing this mountain, he would prove to many and especially to himself that blindness is not a curse. Many people including Erik himself had doubts about finishing the mission. The journey was long. The summit was far, far away. Everest, Eriks dream, seldom forgave climbers. However, with high challenges come high responsibilities. Erik could not let his family or team members down. He fought and struggled for two months and managed to reach the peak at last. He surmounted the blistering winds, the spiky rocks, and the freezing snowstorms of Mount Everest. The mission was completed. Erik has climbed to the tallest point on earth. He literally stood over the top of the world. Everyone had to acknowledge Eriks courage a nd success. Erik could not see, so some people assumed he could not walk, talk, rock, shock, or mock. Alas! He had done what very few humans could do. Blind impressions, such as being lucky to have the first shot of the blind man dead, were forced to fade away. These impressions were replaced with new ones. Erik is now a role model in the community. Erik was blin ...

Do you agree that feminism remains a highly relevant ideology in its challenge to patriarchy and gendered inequality - Essay Example Through the efforts of earlier feminists, there have been major historical changes to favour women in enhancing their rights mostly in the west. Feminism has gone through development in three waves with each of the aiming at achieving particulars goals within a particular period. The first wave that came into place in the early twentieth century to the late 1950s mostly referred to as womenââ¬â¢s suffrage that ensured that women had the right to vote in different parts of the world. After that came in the second wave that began in the 1960s that majored in ensuring that women had equal social and legal rights in the society. Later on, the 1960s came the third wave that is aimed to achieve most of the second wave goals that were not achieved within that period. The third wave has extended since then to date with various feminist identifying and fighting for the rights of women that are being infringed in different parts of the world. In todayââ¬â¢s world feminism remains to be a highly related philosophy in its challenge to gender inequality and patriarchy (Fraser 2009). The idea of gender offers acknowledgement to the fact that each recognized society differentiates between men and women. Thus, the concept/term of gender is a logical method of understanding women and men socially and the modelling of affiliations amongst them. The idea of patriarchy assists the study of male domination in the social order. Gender inequality denotes to the unequal perception or treatment of individuals according to their gender. It ascends from dissimilarities in socially built gender roles in addition to biologically through hormonal differences, brain structure, and chromosomes. Feminists are individuals either men or women who require equivalent opportunities for both genders. Feminist writings on gender became common in the early 1970s when the feminist saw the

Biology news #4 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Biology news #4 - Assignment Example Scientists have put forward that it is important to understand the genes on the Y chromosome as they decide the difference in which manner the cells in males and females read the information expressed by their respective genomes. Y chromosome has shown to shed genes over the course of time as it also depicts a shortening in its length. But analysis of the chromosome in 2012 showed that Y chromosome stabilized itself and loss of genes was stopped for the last 25 million years. Although the genetic make-up of Y chromosome is very difficult to decode, but scientists have found a solution to find the genes on Y chromosome by comparing the DNA to the X chromosome. An important gene on Y chromosome is SRY that determines the male gender and many others are associated with sperm production. Twelve genes on Y chromosome are unique in their characteristic as they are switched on in various cells of the body other than testis. These genes control the expression of various other genes and also the state of genome in other cells. Females have slightly different set of genes which are involved in high regulatory actions. The article brings forward a very significant aspect of the Y chromosome and the research carried out to understand the different genes on Y chromosomes is a step forward in understanding the molecular biology of the genders. However, I think that more research should be carried out to evaluate the ability of Y chromosome to regulate the sex-specific functions in males and exactly how they differ from the X chromosome. I think that understanding the Y chromosome related genes would also aid the scientists in improving their knowledge regarding the X-linked disease patterns and associations with Y

Welfare and Cigarettes Essay Example for Free
Welfare and Cigarettes Essay With the increased health problems that caused by smoking, more and more people think that the production and sale of cigarettes should be made illegal. However, these people tend to ignore that the positive outcome of cigarettes business brings to the society. They also falsely believe that prohibition of producing and selling cigarettes will lead people to adopt a healthier living environment. Cigarettes business is one of the most profitable industries in the world. The government receive huge amount of taxes from cigarettes companies and it actually uses the money to help fund the welfare program, in which a lot of people can benefit from. Making production and sale of cigarettes illegal will definitely hurt the income of the government, and add pressures on many people who are in need of welfare programs. Some producers of cigarettes will probably keep the business running under the table, as they are still attracted by the humongous profit. This will create more problems that it actually has. It may cause chaos to the community, since smokers can go depressed and do harmful things without having cigarettes. It may also increase crime rate, since people have to trade cigarettes illegally; it can burden the government, since the government needs to spend more money on hiring people to stop the illegal sale and purchase of cigarettes. The potential negative effects on the illegalization of cigarettes are clearly telling us that it is not a desirable approach. In addition, many smokers know that if they consume too many cigarettes, their life will be thread with various health problems; however, they still choose to smoke without worrying about their future health. If they have already cared less of their health, they could find way around to purchase cigarettes and smoke anyway even knowing that is illegal. Thus, it cannot provide people with a healthier living environment. In conclusion, the government should not make the production and sale of cigarettes illegal because it will harm the society economically as well as create more problems that it actually has. The cost of illegalization of cigarettes outweighs the advantage of it, thus they should not make producing and selling cigarettes illegal.

Jesusville and Catholic Boys: Silent Suffering in the Novel Essay
Philip Cioffari, in both works, Jesusville and Catholic Boys, puts forth the idea of the ââ¬Å"silent sufferer.â⬠Used in different ways in each of the novels, the ââ¬Å"silent suffererâ⬠is characterized by guilt and shame. This discussion looks at Vee in Jesusville, whose character undergoes punishment as a way of being possessed and alleviating the lost and lonely feeling within her and Arthur and Donald in Catholic Boys, who are punished for the guilt of othersââ¬â¢ sins. These characters ââ¬Å"suffer silently,â⬠each one reinforcing major themes in ââ¬Å"theirâ⬠novels through their punishment. To begin, the discussion focuses on Vickiââ¬â¢s character in Jesusville. When first introduced to Vicki, Cioffari describes her as having a startling beauty, dressed with a look that seemed to be ââ¬Å"a threat to her safetyâ⬠(Cioffari 14). Shortly into the novel, we see Vickiââ¬â¢s uneasiness and her need for validationââ¬âthat is a confirmation of self and of the existence of another. Cioffari writes, ââ¬Å"With her rigid glaze she seemed almost catatonic. She wanted him there, but it was as if nothing existed but herself and maybe not even thatâ⬠(Cioffari 21). Vicki realizes her need to be validated; though, she is unaware of how she is to obtain it. Vicki then asks Trace, ââ¬Å"Did you ever think when you look at yourself like this in the mirror that what youââ¬â¢re seeing isnââ¬â¢t really youâ⬠(Cioffari 22)? She continues, stating, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not Vicki anymore. From now on I want you to call me Vee. Okayâ⬠(Cioffari 22)? It is at this point in the novel that Vee becomes aware of her own isolationââ¬âto Trace and to others. Her loneliness eats away at her and makes it impossible for her to have a fulfilling relationship. Vickiââ¬â¢s shift into the personage of Vee is her validation of the person that s... ... example of the silent sufferer. On the cross, Christ cries out in pain, but never against the men beating him. In none of the biblical accounts does ask them to stop and think about what they are doing. Instead he looks to his Father, resigning himself to Godââ¬â¢s will, knowing that he must be the sacrifice, and like Vee, bear the weight of crimes. As silent sufferers and pictures of Christ, Vee, Arthur, and Donald absolve their sins through their resignation to suffering. Vee is able to alleviate the brokenness within her, resolving her ââ¬Å"faith crisis.â⬠Arthur gives up his fleshly body order to gain a spiritual body through death. Through this process they demonstrate major themes in novel including: redemption, sin, consequences, and resolutionââ¬âideas that can be seen not just in the stories of these three characters, but in the majority of Cioffariââ¬â¢s characters.

Literature: Evaluate Literary Texts in Different Genres Essay
In the novel Regeneration the theme of heroism is quite prominent. There are many characters that are heroic and are revealed to be heroic through the narrative. One of these characters is Dr Rivers. He is the main protagonist in the novel and it is through his personal journey that the story is told. The omniscient narrator is a key element of the story telling; we find out what each of the characters are thinking and feeling without them having to spell it out with dialogue. This is a good way for the reader to understand more about each character than they are willing to give away to each other. Riversââ¬â¢ journey can be shown through his struggles with his duty and his strong values about honour. His heroism comes to the fore metaphorically as he reaches the conclusion to carry on helping his patients even after he has realised that not everyone can be ââ¬Ëfixedââ¬â¢. His heroism is also shown literally when he risks his own life against the rising tide to save the life of David Burns from suicide by drowning. Rivers compares himself to Dr Yealland, looking at his work and seeing the results that Yealland can achieve in such a short space of time. Rivers sees his own method as doing his duty; to send the men back to the war front ââ¬Ëbetterââ¬â¢ and ready to fight. Yeallandââ¬â¢s methods are cruel and sadistic, but they also work, they make the men able to fight again. So in theory he is doing his duty as well. It is this juxtaposition between his own methods and Yeallandââ¬â¢s that Rivers has problems with. He shows us, however, that just because his methods take longer and are less cruel, that he is showing some elements of caring for his patients that are more like a father figure would. It takes a lot more strength to send a now mentally stable man back into the chaos and craziness of war when you care about them and their welfare. Rivers says ââ¬Ëobviously he and Yealland were both in the business of controlling people. Each of them fitted young men back into the role of warrior, a role that they had ââ¬â however unconsciously ââ¬â rejectedââ¬â¢, (chapter 22, page 238). His journey to the conclusion that he did in fact help people, no matter what his feelings about the war and the paradoxes it draws, is shown by Barker as heroism. It is reflected in his actual act of heroism; one that comes at the end of a novel filled with him being unwell and mentally questioning himself and his actions. It shows that he can both be physically and mentally heroic and that he was never a weak or cowardly man. His dedication to his work and his sense of duty is seen when Graves says ââ¬ËWhen you put the uniform on, in à effect you sign a contract. And you donââ¬â¢t back out of a contract merely because youââ¬â¢ve changed your mindââ¬â¢, (chapter 3, page 23) Rivers agrees with Graves, he says ââ¬ËI couldnââ¬â¢t agree with you moreââ¬â¢, but he also sees that the best way to stand up for your principles is to ââ¬Ëdo the jobââ¬â¢ and change peopleââ¬â¢s minds in a different way. Pat Barker has in her novel used a heroic yet gentle and caring protagonist that reflects her personal understanding of the war and its effects on her grandfather who fought in the First World War. She could see how the war had affected him and used this knowledge and understanding in a very poetic and moving way within the novel. Her patients are all deeply troubled and even Dr Rivers himself. Using this very human and relatable way of portrayal she makes the character of Rivers very believable and sympathetic. The empathy of the audience and the hope that he will be able to ââ¬Ëfixââ¬â¢ himself as well as ââ¬Ëfixingââ¬â¢ his patients is what makes the novel compelling and intense. Her way of writing is very subtle and lyrical. There are moments when you lose yourself completely in the images in your head. The visions of the trenches throughout the text are very memorable. Seeing the halls of Craiglockhart as trenches, with ââ¬Ëthe long narrow passage with its double row of brown doors and the absence of natural light. ââ¬ËLike a trench without the sky.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (chapter 2, page 17) is symbolic of Riversââ¬â¢ views about wishing he could see the front again, ââ¬ËRivers pulled the curtains to, and settled down to sleep, wishing, not for the first time, that he was young enough for France.ââ¬â¢ (chapter 9, page 108). The symbolism and imagery of the trenches is also about how trenches are in fact just the massive graves of the young men killed in battle, where other soldiers have to live and breathe there in the open graves of others. When Prior, after being hypnotised, recalls what he was repressing and it was cleaning up the trench after his patrol was killed, Rivers says to him ââ¬ËYou did your duty. Youââ¬â¢ve nothing to reproach yourself with. You even finished cleaning the trenchââ¬â¢, (chapter 9, page 105), it pulls both elements together: The trenches and the idea of duty and honour above breaking down and being weak. Riversââ¬â¢ beliefs about duty and honour are tested when he questions himself, especially after seeing Yeallandââ¬â¢s work. He believes that the way Yealland works is too emotionally and physically sadistic, too cruel to be of lasting help and concludes that his own way of working is better as it exerts no control over the patient but allows the patient to control their own recovery. Riversââ¬â¢ heroism is that he rejects Yeallands ideals and remains a good doctor, who helps people and he can feel proud and good about the methods he uses and the people he has saved. He gets from Head the reassurance he needed when he felt guilty about Sassoonââ¬â¢s decision to go back to the war. Head says ââ¬ËYou and Yealland doing essentially the same thing. Good God, man, if you really believe that itââ¬â¢s the first sign of dementia,ââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëget it clear whose decision it was that he went backââ¬â¢, (chapter 23, page 240-241). Sassoons decision calls into question the definition of madness for Rivers. Is Sassoon mad for wanting not to fight, against all honour and duty? He decides to go back to be with his men that need him, not to make a stand about the war, but if he were to, that would be the better way to do it, rather than rebelling. Rivers questions whether he himself is mad, for sending broken men that heââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëcuredââ¬â¢ back to the front to face death again. The question of duty and honour is not black and white in war time. The heroism that Rivers shows is in accepting the fact that war cannot be stopped, and making any difference that he can is worth it because he can sleep easily at night knowing that he saves lives.

Silver and Test Tube
Copper-silver Nitrate Reaction Introduction In this experiment copper wire will be placed in a solution of silver nitrate. This single replacement reaction will produce a blue solution of copper II nitrate and solid silver. By weighing the reactants before the reaction, the mass of silver produced can be predicted. This theoretical yield can be compared to the actual yield of silver. Purpose Students will compare the theoretical mass of silver with the actual mass of silver from the single replacement reaction between copper and silver nitrate.Materials Copper wire stirring rod 18 x 150 mm test tube silver nitrate, AgN0350 mL graduated cylinder distilled water 100 mL or 250 mL beaker Procedure Day 1 1 . How to Calculate Density of a Gas
How to Calculate Density of a Gas Density is mass per unit volume. Finding the density of a gas is the same as finding the density of a solid or liquid. You have to know the mass and the volume of the gas. The tricky part with gases is that you are often given pressures and temperatures with no mention of volume. You have to figure it out from the other information. This example problem will show how to calculate density of a gas when given the type of gas, the pressure, and the temperature. Question: What is the density of oxygen gas at 5 atm and 27 à °C? First, lets write down what we know: Gas is oxygen gas or O2.Pressure is 5 atmTemperature is 27 à °C Lets start with the Ideal Gas Law formula. PV nRT whereP pressureV volumen number of moles of gasR gas constant (0.0821 Là ·atm/molà ·K)T absolute temperature If we solve the equation for volume, we get: V (nRT)/P We know everything we need to find the volume now except the number of moles of gas. To find this, remember the relationship between number of moles and mass. n m/MM wheren number of moles of gasm mass of gasMM molecular mass of the gas This is helpful since we needed to find the mass and we know the molecular mass of oxygen gas. If we substitute for n in the first equation, we get: V (mRT)/(MMP) Divide both sides by m: V/m (RT)/(MMP) But density is m/V, so flip the equation over to get: m/V (MMP)/(RT) density of the gas. Now we need to insert the values we know. MM of oxygen gas or O2 is 1616 32 grams/moleP 5 atmT 27 à °C, but we need absolute temperature.TK TC 273T 27 273 300 K m/V (32 g/molà à · 5 atm)/(0.0821 Là ·atm/molà ·K à · 300 K)m/V 160/24.63 g/Lm/V 6.5 g/L Answer: The density of the oxygen gas is 6.5 g/L.

Pacific Rim Countries and Economic Tigers
Pacific Rim Countries and Economic Tigers Many of the countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean have helped to create an economic miracle that has become known as the Pacific Rim. In 1944 the geographer N.J. Spykman published a theory about the rim of Eurasia. He proposed that the control of the rimland, as he called it, would effectively allow control of the world. Now, more than fifty years later we can see that part of his theory holds true since the power of the Pacific Rim is quite extensive. The Pacific Rim includes countries bordering the Pacific Ocean from North and South America to Asia to Oceania. Most of these countries have experienced major economic change and growth to become components of an economically integrated trade region. Raw material and finished goods are shipped between Pacific Rim states for manufacture, packaging, and sale. The Pacific Rim continues to gain strength in the global economy. From the colonization of the Americas to just a few years ago, the Atlantic Ocean had been the leading ocean for the shipment of goods and material. Since the early 1990s, the value of goods crossing the Pacific Ocean has been greater than the value of goods crossing the Atlantic. Los Angeles is the American leader in the Pacific Rim as its the source for the most trans-Pacific flights and ocean-based shipments. Additionally, the value of United States imports from Pacific Rim countries is greater than the imports from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) member in Europe. Economic Tigers Four of the Pacific Rim territories have been called Economic Tigers due to their aggressive economies. They have included South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Since Hong Kong has been absorbed as the Chinese territory of Xianggang, it is likely that its status as a tiger will change. The four Economic Tigers have even challenged Japans dominance of the Asian economy. South Koreas prosperity and industrial development are related to their production of items from electronics and clothing to automobiles. The country is about three times larger than Taiwan and has been losing its historical agricultural base to industries. South Koreans are quite busy; their average workweek is about 50 hours, one of the worlds longest. Taiwan, which is not recognized by the United Nations, is a tiger with its major industries and entrepreneurial initiative. China claims the island and the mainland and island are technically at war. If the future includes a merger, hopefully, it will be a peaceful one. The island is about 14,000 square miles and has a focus on its north coast, centered on the capital city of Taipei. Their economy is the twentieth largest in the world. Singapore started its road to success as an entrepot, or free port for transshipment of goods, for the Malay Peninsula. The island city-state became independent in 1965. With tight governmental control and an excellent location, Singapore has effectively utilized its limited land area (240 square miles) to become a world leader in industrialization. Hong Kong became part of China on July 1, 1997, after being the territory of the United Kingdom for 99 years. The celebration of the merger of one of the worlds outstanding examples of capitalism with a major communist nation was watched by the entire world. Since the transition, Hong Kong, which had one of the highest GNPs per capita in the world, continues to maintain their official languages of English and the Cantonese dialect. The dollar continues to be in use but it no longer bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth. A provisional legislature has been installed in Hong Kong and they have imposed limits on opposition activities and have reduced the proportion of the population eligible to vote. Hopefully, additional change wont be too significant for the people. China is attempting to foray into the Pacific Rim with Special Economic Zones and Open Coastal Areas which have special incentives for international investors. These areas are scattered along Chinas coast and now Hong Kong is one of these zones which also includes Chinas largest city, Shanghai. APEC The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organization is composed of 18 Pacific Rim countries. They are responsible for the production of about 80% of the worlds computer and high tech components. The countries of the organization, which has a small administrative headquarters,à include Brunei,à Canada,à Chile,à China,à Indonesia,à Japan, Malaysia,à Mexico,à New Zealand, Papua New Guinea,à Philippines, Singapore,à South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and theà United States. APEC was formed in 1989 to promote free trade and economic integration of the member nations. The heads of state of the member nations met in 1993 and in 1996 while trade officials have annual meetings. From Chile to Canada and Korea to Australia, the Pacific Rim is definitely a region to watch as barriers between the countries are loosened and population grows not only in Asia but also along the Pacific coast of the Americas. The interdependency is likely to increase but can all of the countries win?

Modern Types of Families Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Modern Types of Families - Essay Example I also believe that current family organizations are loosely connected with only a few relatives being able to identify with each other. The transition in American and the rest of the world families was influenced by the invention of farming. This changed the peopleââ¬â¢s way of life from hunters and gathers to a more settled life where they provided a workforce in the farms. Farming changed the lives of people to a more organized family unit as compared to the scattered life they used to live before. This form of life gave them a sense of family identity (Alvin and Toffler, 596). The family units were so big that they included distant relatives, friends and even strangers. The number of children in each family was greater than the old people and the lifestyle encouraged people to sire more children. This was also very important and was considered as part of wealth through family labor. It gave people status in the society since the more children one had the more he or she was res pected. This form of settlement was polygamous and men were respected in terms of the number of wives they had. People performed similar jobs since there were limited opportunities which were mainly farming (Samuels, 114). I believe this kind of settlement was necessary because families were sources of cheap labor and the more family members they were the more the production and hence increasing wealth for the family. The next transition was characterized by the emergence of industries. People settled in small family units as white collar workers and had small family units. Marriage was respected during that era and women played the role of housewives (Alvin and Toffler, 59). Men worked in the industries to provide for their families. Family sizes reduced drastically as people moved to urban areas where there were industries. Also, education was valued and children started attending local schools. The families were mainly composed of father, mother and a few children.à Ã

Latinos films Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Latinos films - Essay Example The Latino community has been faced with numerous problems ranging from labor problems to social problems. This can be rooted to the fact that the community is considered as a minority race in the United States alongside other races like the African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans among other minority races. Like others races which had these kinds of problems, there are some movies which have been produced to highlight the problems of the Latino community in the United States. This paper will look into some of these movies and highlight the problems that have been highlighted in these movies. One of the movies that have been produced to highlight the plight of the Latino community is movie titled, 'The Fight in the Fields.' The Fight in the Fields is a Latino documentary movie produced, directed, and written by Rick Tejada-Flores and Ray Telles. The documentary covers the eventful life of Cesar Chavez in his epic struggle. The documentary movie is based on newsreel, archival footage, and interviews with California Governor Jerry Brown, Dolores Huerta, and Cesar Chavez family members including his brother, sister, son and daughter. Cesar Chavez and the farmworkers' struggle is a presentation of the Independent Television Services (ITVS) and are produced by Paradigm Productions (The Fight in the Fields, 16th May). The two hour documentary covers the first successful organizing drive of farm workers in the United States. It first premiered in 1997 in the Sundance Film Festival and was aired across the United States on PBS from 97 through 2000. It was also aired in the Sundance Channel in 2001 and 2002. The main focus of the documentary is on Cesar Chavez's dramatic attempts to unionize farm workers. The documentary covers the following areas of Cesar Chavez life: His earlier years. His adolescent life as a farm worker His young years as a community organizer His relationship and eventual marriage to Helen. Helen Chavez was instrumental in the movement since she supported her husband to focus his energy to the movement. The dramatic events that Cesar Chavez was involved in during his time in the movement. This helped the cause of the movement since it attracted the attention of the press. The non violent strikes attracted the attention of the public. This was a plus to their cause because it put pressure on farm owners and the government. His three hundred mile march. His friendship with Robert Kennedy Cesar Chavez and the farm workers major barrier was the Bracero Program which brought thousands of Mexican contract workers to work in the United States. The movie shows how Cesar Chavez unionized farm workers who led non violent strikes. Up to date migrant workers continue to face numerous problems. There are an estimated three and half million immigrants in the United States who are predominantly Latino (78%). They move their permanent residence so as to seek employment mainly in agricultural farms. Their kind of employment is usually of short durations and demand regular 'migration'. Almost fifty percent of migrant farm workers have less than ninth grade education. They face the problem of language barrier because they speak little or no English. Majority of farm workers live under the poverty level and very few receive worker's compensation or social security. Such benefits are hard to

Lower division capstone ip4 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Lower division capstone ip4 - Essay Example Recently, Foxconn Technology Group workers went on strike demanding better working conditions. As a supplier to many blue-chip companies, Foxconn failed in the area of employee empowerment. Instead of a strike which is detrimental to the progress of a company, empowered employees seek negotiations. As the senior manager in such a situation, I would have sought dialogue and not ignored the workersââ¬â¢ grievances. The other theory in this case would be the alternative dispute resolution theory. This would include the resolution of all issues that come about without a need to seek legal advice or going on strike. The theory of penetration pricing advocates for offering lower prices for given products during their introduction into the market to drive away competition. The benefits of applying this method lay in the aspect of attracting customers away from the competition. If applied correctly, penetration pricing can be a very successful marketing method which could increase a companyââ¬â¢s sales volume and market share. The high sales volume often realized by this method could translate to lower production costs or a higher inventory turnover or both. The application of this theory therefore comes about as a method for entering the market especially when it is almost crowded by similar products by competitors. In the recent past, smartphone company Apple has introduced mobile phones with lower prices to enter the mainstream market. Apple is known for making products that are aimed at the luxurious consumer but had to enter the lower-end market to keep its market share. If I were the senior manager in this case, I would ensure that the lower-end market remains catered for by the penetration pricing model by increasing the quality of the gadgets offered compared to the competition. Another theory in such a case would be the theory of market segmentation. This theory also advocates for the division of markets with the

Problems with Education Essay Example for Free
Problems with Education Essay What is it thatââ¬â¢s making our nation suffer from excelling in education? Not many would argue about the importance of excellence in education. Problems such as teacher attrition, lack of parent involvement, and teaching high-stakes testing may hinder progress in education. An education is an indispensable and essential tool, unfortunately, with all the jaded judgments; our students arenââ¬â¢t valuing or able to value their education. An Education can open the doors to opportunities that would have never been possible if it had not been for the knowledge and preparation that one received while in school. With the fluctuating economy and hesitant times, it is more important than ever for our nationââ¬â¢s children to receive the proper education and training that will allow them to acquire a good job and produce the revenue needed to live. Unfortunately, there are many problems facing our education system today, and several of them are having negative effects on the quality of the education our students are receiving. Would one feel comfortable fifty years from now, when the children who are victim of the disadvantages of teacher attrition, lack of parent involvement and a majority of their education being how to take a high stakes test, are running this nation? How soundly can one sleep knowing that their decisions on a bill deciphering how much of a pension someone will receive or whatââ¬â¢s legal and whatââ¬â¢s not is at stake? Should these problems be quietly swept under the rug and addressed again in another five years, or is it best bite the financial bullet and at the very least, acknowledge there is an issue? A serious problem that is attacking the education system in America is the alarming attrition rate of teachers. Only those not involved with education at all will argue that it is an undemanding profession; in actuality, it is a very demanding profession with an often overwhelming amount of pressure and responsibility tied to it. However, it can also be a very rewarding profession. Unfortunately, many teachers simply cannot overcome the immense responsibilities well enough to stick with the profession for any length of time. Jalongo and Heider (2006) present staggering statistics in their article, saying that forty-six percent of new teachers in this country quit teaching after five years or less, with that percentage growing to fifty percent in urban areas. Even more shocking is the fact that ninety percent of teachers who are hired in this country are replacements for teachers who have left teaching for some reason other than retirement (p. 379). There are many reasons that the rate of teachers leaving the profession is so high. Anhorn (2008) very concisely sums up some of the major problems in her article when she says, ââ¬Å"Difficult work assignments, inadequate resources, isolation, role conflict, and reality shock are some top reasons for the horrendous attrition statistics with the widespread ââ¬Å"sink or swimâ⬠attitude that is prevalent in so many schoolsâ⬠(p. 15). It is easy to see why the beginning teacher attrition rate is so high. There is simply so much to do these days, between extracurricular responsibilities and high-stakes testing, it is easy to get overwhelmed. In her article, Sitler (2007) sums it up quite nicely when she says, No one expects the first years of teaching to be easy. No one expects that Teaching assignments will never change. But no one expects either that Oneââ¬â¢s first years of teaching will be compromised by administrative Systems that make instability and disillusionment routine occurrences Rather than exceptions. (p. 22) If teachers received more support from the administration and less of the strong arm effect, educators wouldnââ¬â¢t be so timid in teaching and instead bring more value to the classroom. Many of us probably remember our parents being very involved with our education, whether they were part of the PTA or just asked about your grades and homework every day when you got home. Unfortunately, today, parental involvement seems to be waning. While there still is a good deal of involvement at the elementary level, middle school and high school, when children really need that parental guidance, itââ¬â¢s almost nonexistent. It is our responsibility to try to involve parents who seem hesitant and reluctant to be a part of their childââ¬â¢s education. No matter what the hesitation is from the parent, be it a language barrier,à fear of school itself, whatever might be causing a parent to be stand offish about their childââ¬â¢s education and being an active part of it, not only the teacher, but administration should use every opportunity to pull a parent in and allow them to become and active part in their childs education. When parents are involved in education, teens typically have higher grade point averages, higher test scores on standardized and classroom assessments, enrollment in more rigorous academic courses, more classes passed, more credits earned toward graduation, and higher graduation rates. Parents are not performing their duties as first teacher to their kids in education. Many parents left their kids behind and keep putting the blame on the teachers due to their misunderstanding of the No Child Left Behind Act. These parents concerned are the ones who left their kids behind and not the schools; teachers are secondary to kidsââ¬â¢ education. Unfortunately so many educators feel such pressure to prepare students for the TAKS test that they fail to ever demonstrate the relevance of what they are teaching. They fail to teach the items within the curriculum that are useful outside of the walls of the school. So, we have students who graduate and can solve quadratic equations, classify living organisms and distinguish between a plant and an animal cell but donââ¬â¢t know how to budget money, complete a financial aid form, solve a real-world problem, think for themselves, or apply the testing information beyond what was taught. I have heard people say the purpose of the exams is to make sure our students do not graduate before they know basics skillsâ⬠¦ like Physics? Most of the arguments I hear come from people who have never even looked at the test; people who just blindly adhere to the regulations because it is a law. Which leads me to the most frustrating and most often argument I hear which is, ââ¬Å"We need to hold students accountable because it is the law? â⬠Well, there have been lots of bad laws over the years. Does anyone remember the Jim Crow laws? If as a country we were to have blindly followed these laws, then blacks and whites would still be segregated. There is no denying the fact that the problems mentioned, are not going to go away over night. They are major issues facing American education, and educators simply must do everything in our power to conquer them. An education is such a valuable and necessary tool, and we must do everything we can to get our students to value their education. I personally do believe there is hope for a positive change. Problems donââ¬â¢t fix themselves, and if admitting that we need help in going about the way our nation views the importance of education is what needs to be done, then itââ¬â¢s time to slap on the ââ¬Å"HELLO MY NAME IS â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ sticker and start being honest and start fixing the problems of teacher attrition, lack of parent involvement and teaching children how to take a state issued test. The Talent of Iago in Shakespeares Othello Essay -- Shakespeare Othel
The Talent of Iago in Othelloà à à à à William Shakespeare's Othello is a tragic drama that shows the overwhelming power of deception and the damage it can lead to.à Othello's right-hand man is Iago; on the surface a die-hard friend and confidant, in reality comparable to the devil himself.à Iago uses other characters as though they were his puppets, planting lies and watching the sorrowful fruit born.à Iago deceives virtuous, yet weaker men (such as Cassio and Roderigo) with ease, but feels greatly threatened by the most powerful, virtuous general in the land - Othello.à Othello's only flaw is jealousy, and Iago exploits this to no end, using him to get what he wants.à Iago's talent to manipulate the truth and control other people with his lies is what gives this play momentum.à More than any other characteristic, Iago preys on those who are emotionally unsure of their desires.à Iago manages to find ways of altering these characters' perceptions of reality, forcing them to believe in the dark world that Iago has created for them.à The main emotions that Iago bends and twists are those of love... ... Kite Runner Essay Essay
Khaled Hosseiniââ¬â¢s kite runner has many themes that are significant. This book also has themes that are hidden to the reader, to find these themes the reader needs to think about the events that occur in the book. In this book redemption, discrimination, and violence play a big role in the events in this book. Redemption is one of the most important themes in the kite runner. Throughout the story, Amir is trying to redeem himself because of many events that he was a part of. In the begging of the story Rahim Khan calls Amir and tells him ââ¬Å"There is a way to be good again. â⬠(Page 2) Putting this in the first chapter of the story tells the reader many things about Amir, it could tell us that Amir has done many things that he regrets, or he has done things that caused pain to someone else. Amirââ¬â¢s mother dies when she is giving birth to him, throughout the story Amir tries many different things to redeem himself to his father. When Amir wins the kite competition he thinks that he would finally redeem himself for his mothers death. Amir thinks that he redeems himself because ââ¬Å"A smile played down on my fatherââ¬â¢s lips. He opened his armsâ⬠(Page 79) When someone does this someone will automatically think that you redeemed yourself to that person. Another event that Amir does that he redeems himself for later is when he blackmails Hassan. Amirââ¬â¢s father gives him a watch and Amir decides to put it under Hassanââ¬â¢s pillow. Later when Amirââ¬â¢s father finds out that he took his watch he forgives him, but Ali (Hassanââ¬â¢s father) says that they make the decision to leave. To the near end of the book, when Amir goes back to Afghanistan, he receives a letter from Hassan. The letter tells him that he (Hassan) died, and that he has a son that it taken by the Taliban. Amir tells Farid (The person who takes Amir around in Afghanistan) about Sohrab, and he tells him ââ¬Å"You have a visa to go to America, to life with me and my wife. Itââ¬â¢s true. I promiseâ⬠(Page 355) When Amir found out that he lost his best friend he went through a lot of trouble to get Sohrab. Amir could have avoided this if he did not frame Hassan. If Amir did not frame Hassan, Hassan and Ali could have fled the country with Amir and his father. This event has a big impact on the events in the story. Without these examples of redemption, it is hard to picture the book ending in the way that it did. Along with many other themes, discrimination is one of the less discussed themes in this book. In my opinion I think that discrimination should be a theme that should be as important as any other theme. Discrimination plays a big role in the kite runner because of the structure of the social classes. In the begging of the story we know that Hassan is Amirââ¬â¢s Hazara but later we know that he is Amirââ¬â¢s brother. When Amir won the kite competition Hassan went to get the winning the kite. Hours had passed and Hassan did not show up. Amir goes looking for him and he asks Omar (only involved in one paragraph) if he saw Hassan, Omar answers him by saying ââ¬Å"Your Hazara? â⬠(Page 68) without saying more than two sentences, we can see that people in the class with Hassan are treated with no respect and they are called Hazaras. Another event that happens when Hassan finally finds the kite that allowed Amir to win the competition he is surrounded by Assef and his gang. Assef is one of the biggest discriminators towards Hazaras as he is intimidating Hassan, he says, ââ¬Å"A loyal Hazara, Loyal as a dogâ⬠(Page 72) When Hassan said this he could of compared Hassan to something else, but he picked a dog to show the most disrespect towards Hassan. In my own opinion I think that discrimination towards Hazaras in Kabul is horrible because they are treated as if they are a different race of people. Hazaras have the exact physical features as any average human being but they are treated like they are slaves. This is how discrimination, which is one of the themes that is not talked about a lot, is significant in this book. Violence is also one of the themes that are not discussed as much, violence should be because it is important and it is hidden. There are many examples that show violence in the book. One of the examples that show violence is when Hassan gets raped when Assef and his gang surround him. The author does not tell the reader that Hassan got raped but instead he makes Wali, one of the members of Assefââ¬â¢s gang, tell Assef ââ¬Å"My father says itââ¬â¢s sinfulâ⬠(Page 75) This is a indirect message to inform the reader that Hassan gets raped. This is one great example that violence plays a big role in the process of this book. Assef could of threated Hassan instead of raping him. In my opinion I think that he could not have done something that wasnââ¬â¢t related to violence. Assef wanted to have his revenge on Hassan but it was hard to do something that has nothing to do with violence. Later on in the book, when Amir and Hassan do not talk to each other after Hassan got raped for him over a kite. Hassan asked if he could go under the pomegranate tree and let Amir read a story for him. When Amir and Hassan were under the pomegranate tree, Hassan asked Amir what he was doing wrong so he could stop, Amir told him that Hassan should stand up for himself. Hassan did not answer and Amir started to throw pomegranates on Hassan, Amir then told him ââ¬Å"Hit me back! Hit me back goddamn youâ⬠(Page 92) this is another great example that shows the violence that is included in the book. Hassan is the most loyal person in the book and Amir does not appreciate it; instead Amir wants Hassan to hit him with a pomegranate. When Hassan stands up, he then smears a pomegranate on his face and walks away. This is how violence plays a theme in the book. It is not as visible as the other themes in the book but it is as significant as the other themes. Redemption, discrimination, and violence are themes in Khaled Hosseiniââ¬â¢s kite runner that play a big role in the book. Without these three themes it is hard to picture if the book would end up the way that it actually ended up being. Quotes and Information taken from ââ¬Å"Kite Runnerâ⬠by Khaled Hosseini.

National Curriculum Subject Of Science
In this assignment I will be looking at the National Curriculum topic of Science. I shall be looking at be aftering a scientific discipline lesson and instruction to a whole category. I will look critically at facets of the scientific discipline course of study, including the Early Years Foundation Stage ( EYFS ) . Once the scientific discipline lesson has been taught, I will measure how good the lesson went, if there was any jobs and if there was, how they were overcome. When be aftering the lesson I will look at the misconceptions in scientific discipline and how resources/strategies help to put these misconceptions straight. I will besides look at ICT in the scientific discipline course of study and how ICT was used in the planned and taught scientific discipline lesson. The manner scientific discipline is taught has been good discussed with those who say that kids should be taught scientific discipline and those who say kids should be taught to hold an apprehension of scientific discipline. Cockburn ( 2001 ) provinces, ââ¬Å" Others hold a well- established position that a chief purpose of school scientific discipline is to advance enthusiasm for the topic and to heighten students ââ¬Ë apprehension of, and, involvement in, scientific issues in big life. â⬠( Cockburn, 2001, pg 183 ) So Cockburn believes that instructors should teach kids in a manner that excites them, and wants them to be influenced in their adult/ calling life. However in the Independent reappraisal of the Primary Curriculum: Concluding study, it looks at the instruction of Science as, ââ¬Å" Scientific and technological apprehension. â⬠( Rose, 2009, pg 47 ) Rose believes that kids should be taught to hold merely an apprehension of scientific discipline instead than hold learning that leads them to desire a calling in scientific discipline. As a practician I believe that the topic of scientific discipline should be taught to hold an apprehension of scientific discipline. This apprehension should be taught with such creativeness and enthusiasm that the kids will desire to detect and research on their ain. After looking at the National Curriculum for Science, and talking with the category instructor, it was decided that the subdivision on visible radiation and dark was to be taught following. The kids had a basic apprehension on light and dark, due to them holding a brief debut to the topic in a old hebdomad. As the kids are in Key Stage One, in conformity with The National Curriculum for Science ( 1999 ) kids are to be taught, ââ¬Å" To place different visible radiation beginnings, including the Sun. â⬠and ââ¬Å" that darkness in the absence of visible radiation. â⬠( QCA, 1999, pg19 ) The instruction of light and dark at this phase helps to construct up a foundation for subsequently larning linked to light and sound. An earlier foundation is built in the EYFS, for a acquisition of Science. Such ends are, ââ¬Å" Find out about their environment, and speak about those characteristics they like and dislike. â⬠( DCSF, 2008, pg 15 ) This builds a foundation for visible radiation and dark ; this is because light/dark is portion of their environment. This end besides allows for schoolroom treatment which is cardinal for their societal edifice accomplishments at this phase. Another foundation gal that is linked to the visible radiation and dark subdivision is, ââ¬Å" Observe, happen out about and place characteristics in the topographic point they love and the natural universe. â⬠( DCSF, 2008, pg 15 ) This helps to construct a foundation, as the kids are taught about things that occur in the natural universe, i.e. visible radiation and darkness. After light and dark has been taught at Key Stage One, the acquisition continues into Key Stage Two. The first thing that kids are taught is, ââ¬Å" That light travels from a beginning. â⬠( QCA, 1999, pg 26 ) Others include, that when visible radiation is blocked it forms shadows, that on brooding surfaces the light reverberates and eventually that the visible radiation has to come in our eyes to enable us to see. ( QCA, 1999, pg 26 ) The foundations are built in the EYFS with the kids being taught to detect the universe around them ; this creates a basic cognition needed to reassign to Key Stage one and two. I shall now critically reflect on the scientific discipline course of study, looking at the scientific discipline on a whole. Newton, 2000, pg 232 describes how the scientific discipline course of study faces issues on a whole, ââ¬Å" Here we will look at the demand for you to see certain operational affairs in the primary scientific discipline schoolroom such as jobs of schoolroom administration and direction and the ways in which you and the kids interact during lessons. â⬠So before contemplation on the course of study its ââ¬Ë ego, the agreement and way of the schoolroom has come under examination. Newton believes that administration affects the instruction of scientific discipline ; nevertheless Garson looks at how the resources are the precedence. ââ¬Å" A utile manner of guaranting that the schoolroom a instructor plant in is contributing to making scientific discipline activities is to name the demands created by such activities and so guarantee that it is possible, within the peculiar restraints imposed by the school, to fit those demands every bit about as possible. â⬠( Garson, 2007, pg 78 ) Another issue has been brought up by the Houses of Parliament, ââ¬Å" Factors within primary schools that may impact students ââ¬Ë involvement in scientific discipline, include ; whether scientific discipline instruction is adapted by single schools to reflect the involvement of their students ; the focal point on readying for SAT ââ¬Ës trials in the last twelvemonth of primary school ; primary instructors ââ¬Ë degree of scientific cognition and assurance in learning scientific discipline. â⬠( Houses of Parliament, 2003, pg 2 ) They believe that there are issues in the primary course of study that discourage the acquisition and enthusiasm of the kids in the schoolroom. However Mertler, 2005, pg 217, writes about a survey conducted with parents and kids. He summarises the decision of the survey, ââ¬Å" 60 % of the parents considered their kids enthusiastic or really enthusiastic about larning scientific discipline both before and after the survey. â⬠The survey was conducted one twelvemonth after the papers from the Houses of Parliament was published. It could be looked upon the papers assisting the instruction of scientific discipline ; by instructor improving and accommodating their instruction methods. Although it is possible that no alterations were implemented and the position of instructors, parents and kids changed for no ground. Another issue in scientific discipline is the job of misconceptions. As described by Tweed, ââ¬Å" The word misconception denotes an mistake in believing about the scientific discipline construct, while prepossession is frequently more accurate, since the thoughts arose from their ain experiences and without formal scientific discipline direction. â⬠( Tweed, 2009, pg 104 ) Tweed believes that there are lone prepossessions instead than misconceptions. This is because kids perceive scientific discipline from their experience instead than holding a misconception due to deficient instruction. Dean discusses why there could be possible misconceptions in the scientific discipline course of study, ââ¬Å" Children attack scientific discipline with thoughts of their ain about why things are they manner they are and these theories are frequently incompatible with the thoughts instructors want them to larn. â⬠( Dean, 2005, pg 80 ) The Committee on Undergraduate scientific discipline instruction, 1997, pg 27 looks further into the quandary of misconceptions in scientific discipline. They province, ââ¬Å" Students are frequently able to utilize algorithms to work out numerical jobs without wholly understanding the implicit in scientific discipline construct. â⬠They speculate that kids can cognize replies to inquiries, frequently through rote, but non hold any apprehension of the scientifical background. If kids have no apprehension of the scientifical background of things so how can this aid with their job work outing accomplishments? Looking more closely at misconceptions in scientific discipline, I will now concentrate on light and dark. Looking at the misconceptions in the visible radiation and dark subdivision will assist me be after my lesson subsequently. The first misconception that I come across was that some kids believe, ââ¬Å" The oculus is the lone organ for sight ; the encephalon is the merely for thought. â⬠( Weiler, 2009 ) Although this is non straight elated to light and dark on the whole it is linked. This is because kids need to larn that the visible radiation helps us to see, but we can utilize our other senses to happen things. A survey conducted by Pine, Messer and St.John, 2001, pg 11, besides noted some misconceptions of kids, some of these include, ââ¬Å" One kid thought you light a bulb by seting it in the Sun, another believed that visible radiations are the chief beginning of visible radiation. Four instructors highlighted the misconception that the Moon is a beginning of visible radiation. â⬠St John, Pine and Messer, 2001 conducted a he-man with instructors on the misconceptions in scientific discipline. There were many misconceptions within the scientific discipline course of study. It is hard to understand how kids have these misconceptions/ prepossessions. Where the kid thought that a light bulb demands to be put in the Sun to visible radiation, it is possible that this is a prepossession instead than a misconception. The kids might hold experience with solar energy, but non hold the scientifical apprehension that the bulb could be powered in an alternate manner. However, if there are possible misconceptions for the visible radiation and dark subdivision, it is accomplishable and indispensable to get rid of them. There are many ways to subvert misconceptions ; the most good is published by the Committee on Undergraduate scientific discipline instruction, 1997, pg 30, ââ¬Å" Carefully selected presentations are one manner of assisting pupils overcome misconceptions. â⬠This peculiar system of get the better ofing misconceptions helps kids who are kinesthetic scholars, as kids learn best by making. If the instructor was to utilize shows with the kids, the ââ¬Ëhands on ââ¬Ë larning attack will assist to overcome the misconceptions. Bing able to place possible misconceptions and how to get the better of them is acute to assist when be aftering lessons. Planing lessons is important to assist raise the accomplishment of the kids and to run into the standards set by the National Curriculum, ââ¬Å" There are four chief schemes for raising accomplishment. They are: a planned course of study that has both comprehensiveness and deepness ; strategies of work that break down the course of study into manageable balls ; effectual lesson programs ; distinction, so that each kid is able to work to his or her ain potency and non execute undertakings that are either excessively easy or excessively hard. â⬠( Smith, 2002, pg 96 ) If instructors are to learn to the right criterion and beyond so they should be after their lessons with links to the National Curriculum. Using the QCA strategies of work will assist every bit will the use of distinction. As cited earlier the kids will be looking at the visible radiation and dark subdivision of the scientific discipline course of study. The misconceptions faced earlier are assistive towards the planning of the lesson. This is because presentations will be projected to help kids repress their misconceptions. Teachers besides need to be after for distinction during any topic, nevertheless from experience it can assist to hold assorted ability groups that will back up each other. Newton, 2000, pg 216 describes how instructor should travel about planning for scientific discipline, ââ¬Å" When planning for scientific discipline there are four peculiar standards you need to thing about ; comprehensivenesss, balance, continuity and patterned advance. â⬠Newton conceives that to be after a scientific discipline lesson, instructors should believe about ââ¬Ëbreadth ââ¬Ë . The ââ¬Ëbreadth ââ¬Ë agencies to cover a broad scope of each subdivision ; non merely concentrating on each sub-section separately. The ââ¬Ëbalance ââ¬Ë of the planning is the balance of learning for an apprehension and consecutive frontward learning. ââ¬ËContinuity ââ¬Ë is linked with the appraisal, guaranting that the kids to the full understand before traveling on to the following subject. Finally ââ¬Ëprogression ââ¬Ë can besides be associated to continuity. It focuses more on guaranting the kids have a full apprehension and any misconceptions have been overco me. When be aftering the lesson I felt it was needed and good to re-cover any anterior cognition they may hold. Walker, 2008, pg 9 besides suggests utilizing this clip to recap old lessons/ cognition, ââ¬Å" In a typical hr lesson this will take 5-10 proceedingss. Its intent is to give pupils a spirit of the lesson and to acquire them believing. Alternatively it could be an activity to arouse what they remember from a old lesson. â⬠The starting motor of the lesson will be a PowerPoint that will be synergistic and able to be used on the SMART Board. I decided to utilize PowerPoint as it is package that can be projected onto the SMART Board which will enable the kids to interact with the PowerPoint. Likewise PowerPoint is package that I have a batch of experience with, so I am able to determine that it is an exciting stimulation for the kids. Miller, Averis and Sherran, 2004, pg 7 describe in item how good utilizing PowerPoint/ synergistic whiteboard in the schoolroom can be. They suggest that it can motivate both the kids and the instructor ; in many instances it can help concentration. It is besides non clip consuming, leting farther clip for independent work. Potter and Roberts, 2002, besides study on the benefits of utilizing PowerPoint, ââ¬Å" Using a computing machine helps pupils to widen their concentration and doggedness ; since they are extremely motivated to win in their undertaking, students will persist for far longer that they would with a undertaking on paper. â⬠PowerPoint helps all kids with their concentration non merely those who are ocular and kinesthetic scholars. Looking at my ain experience in the schoolroom, when other instructors have used PowerPoint I have observed kids, who ne'er typically answer, seting their manus up and holding a attempt. I chose to utilize PowerPoint over any other package because of the broad scope of interaction and media available when utilizing it. Besides it is compatible with about all laptops and desktop computing machines, so there would be no issues, during the lesson, with compatibility. However some believe that there are issues when utilizing PowerPoint in the schoolroom, Brown, 2007, pg 1 notes that in some instances people/children can go un-affected by PowerPoint ââ¬Ës if they are used excessively much and in emanation. However it could be argued that if the presentations were synergistic and prosecuting so neither the kids nor the instructor would go tired of them. Chin, 2004, pg 29 besides notes a frequent issue when utilizing PowerPoint in the schoolroom. He believes that some instructors can be allured by the broad scope of media available and over usage it, therefore doing it endearing but besides deflecting for some kids. On the other manus the scope of media used, could, show a benefit to those in the schoolroom. This is because each type of media ( exposures, sketchs, picture, sound or graphs ) is suited to cover all of the different acquisition manners that the kids have. ICT should be used in the schoolroom at a assortment of times whether it is to ; present a subject, re-cap old lessons work, to informally assess kids or as an educational activity for those kids who have finished their work early. However there are besides times when ICT should non be used, the main clip is when a kid is fighting with their work ; this clip should be a one to one instructor focal point clip. The PowerPoint I used in my lesson links to the larning nonsubjective, ââ¬Å" That there are many beginnings of visible radiation. ââ¬Å" ( QCA, 1998, pg 2 ) This is taken from the QCA Schemes of work for Science. The PowerPoint ( Appendix A ) links to this peculiar acquisition aim. This is because it asks kids what kind of beginnings of visible radiation they can believe of. Then to widen their cognition the kids are so able to play a game placing the light beginnings. As I used PowerPoint during my lesson instead than any other ICT, I feel that the lesson flowed more easy. Besides as I used ICT at the beginning of the lesson I sense the kids were focused. By utilizing an synergistic piece of package I was able to detect the kids and inquiry them, whilst they were playing the game. Sing the PowerPoint and the kids in footings of accomplishment I feel as though it did assist the kids to carry through. The PowerPoint helped the kids meet the required acquisition aim, it besides help the kids to derive an apprehension of the many available light beginnings. When be aftering the independent portion of the lesson, I felt that this was the best country to assist get the better of the kids ââ¬Ës misconceptions. As radius about earlier the best manner to get the better of the misconceptions is through presentation. Wragg and Brown, 2001, pg 15 besides back up the theory of ââ¬Ëhow ââ¬Ë , ââ¬Å" Wrapped inside a ââ¬Ëwhy? ââ¬Ë inquiry is frequently a ââ¬Ëhow? ââ¬Ë inquiry. â⬠The best manner to reply ââ¬Ëhow? ââ¬Ë is to actively include the inquirer in a presentation, this is frequently more helpful as the kids learn best by making, which Wragg and Brown ( 2 ) , 2001, pg 56 besides back up, ââ¬Å" Most kids ( and grownups ) learn best when actively involved. â⬠I decided to cover the learning aims, ââ¬Å" That visible radiation is indispensable for seeing things â⬠and ââ¬Å" That when it is dark other senses can be used to assist us happen things and place things. â⬠( QCA, 1999, pg 2 ) To make this I covered three of the school desks with blinds, towels, covers and other stuff, I so ensured that under the tabular array was in darkness. I so laid out a assortment of objects under the tabular array and on the roof of the tabular array for the kids to happen. ( Appendix B ) I chose a few kids at a clip out of the category, before they went under the tabular array I questioned them as to how they were be aftering to happen the objects as it was traveling to be dark, this was to re implement the ââ¬Ëdifferent senses ââ¬Ë portion of the acquisition aim. Once the kids had found two or three objects, they were so asked to come out and place the object and state the others what they thought it was. For the plenary of the lesson I decided to garner all the kids on the rug to discourse they activity that they had merely done. I asked the kids about what they had used to happen the objects e.g. their custodies. I besides asked them about how they knew what each point was, this was to guarantee that they had achieved the lessons larning aim. The appraisal of the kids was done throughout the lesson ; this was done by observation of the kids ââ¬Ës apprehension during the lesson debut. This was besides done through oppugning the kids during the chief portion of the lesson on what senses they will utilize to happen the objects. The usage of oppugning during the lesson is as fast and easy attack of appraisal, ââ¬Å" Questioning is one of the most utile methods of distinguishing appraisal. Oral and written responses to varied degrees and types of inquiries help the instructors officially and informally acquire an thought of how the category and single pupils are understanding the constructs of the unit of survey. â⬠( Northey, 2004, pg 146 ) As there was no written work, observation and oppugning were the most expert methods of appraisal during this lesson, it besides helped as I could en-visage if any of the kids were fighting during the starting motor and give them excess support. As this was a scientific discipline lesson none of the kids were split into ability groups. This was besides because for most of the lesson the kids were on the rug, those who were of lower ability were given excess support from the Particular Support Assistants, Farrell affirms this belief, ââ¬Å" However, the chief ways of differentiating can be brought together in six attacks. These are: distinction by result, undertaking, support, schoolroom administration, resources and extension. â⬠( Farrell, 1999, pg 50 ) After learning the lesson, I experience that the lesson had really few major jobs. It is evident that the usage of play/demonstration helped the kids to larn, this is supported by many theoreticians. An old Chinese adage says, ââ¬Å" I hear I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. â⬠( Conficius, 551BC- 479BC ) If kids are to hear they bury, if they see something they will remember it, nevertheless if they do it they will grok the construct behind it. One job during the chief instruction activity was that under the tabular array, it was non dark plenty, which would consequence the result of placing the object. This was easy overcome by adding more stuff to do it darker. The kids were engaged while the PowerPoint was on during the lesson, although the game did over run into the chief instruction of the lesson, with respects to clip ; as a effect there was small clip for me to make inquiries with the kids. This nevertheless was overcome by oppugning them, whilst they were waiting to make the undertaking. The inquiring was an indispensable portion of the lesson, as mentioned before it was portion of the appraisal of the kids. In future when composing lesson programs, I shall compose approximative timings in each box, to guarantee that there is clip for oppugning. As I had planned portion of the lesson to get the better of any possible misconceptions or prepossessions I can be certain that the kids did non complete the lesson with any of them ; this is critical to the scientific discipline lessons subsequently in each cardinal phases. I feel as though the usage of ICT did better the instruction and acquisition of the lesson, I felt as though it helped to better and keep their concentration and apprehension. Williams, 2003, pg 8 besides agrees, ââ¬Å" If the admiration and exhilaration of scientific discipline is non to be lost, so it is imperative that ICT should be included, non merely to streamline to treat, but to actuate the kids and heighten the quality of their acquisition. â⬠However Farmey, 2002, page 131, notes a logical point that many instructors should inquire themselves, the followers, when believing about utilizing ICT, ââ¬Å" Is the usage of ICT a better method than pencil and paper? The method hence being considered must offer advantages over the other attacks ; if it does non so the usage of ICT should be questioned. â⬠In response to Farmey ââ¬Ës thought, looking at my usage of ICT in the lesson, I do non believe that the kids would hold benefited every bit much as they did if I was to hold used another method of learning. The acquisition was synergistic, and all the kids desired to hold a attempt at replying. Although another job faced was some of the kids gave unhoped replies in order to seek and utilize the synergistic whiteboard. If I were to utilize this type of presentation once more I would turn it into a merriment game where if they were to give a cockamamie reply I would be able to steal one of their points. On farther analysis of my lesson I do experience as though farther distinction was needed. Upon reiterating a similar lesson I would guarantee that those of lower ability were observed and assessed ( informally ) to guarantee that they had a clear apprehension. Upon looking back at the lesson program and the lesson itself, I have found three cardinal countries to look upon in the hereafter. These are ; the timing of the lesson, guaranting full distinction of the kids and besides guaranting the resources/ activity are equal. The first affair that asks for attending is the timing of the lesson ; this is indispensable to guarantee that the kids are covering all that is planned, ââ¬Å" Regularly running out of clip alters the balance of the lesson and means the decision is neglected. â⬠( Overall & A ; Sangster, 2003, pg 181 ) Clocking demands to be kept in order for a full and proper plenary to take topographic point. The plenary of the lesson is where the chief portion of appraisal is done, if there is limited clip to make the appraisal so this does non organize an accurate history. Differentiation is another thing that needs attending in the hereafter. Although there was distinction, with the particular support helpers assisting the lower ability kids ; I feel as though there could hold been more accent on it. Hayes, 2006, pg 63 expressions at distinction being in two classs, ââ¬Å" There are two chief types of distinction used by primary instructors. The first type is where all students are given similar undertakings to make but the outlook differs consequently to the student ââ¬Ës academic competency. The 2nd type of distinction is where students of different academic proficiency are given typical undertakings and activities on the same topic but with differing degrees of challenge. â⬠Looking at Hayes, 2006, pg 63 If I was to make the lesson once more I would guarantee that the lower ability had more focussed help/encouragement, besides that the higher ability was given more ambitious objects to place. Finally it is besides indispensable that all resources/ activities are checked and ascertain that they will enable to better the kids ââ¬Ës acquisition. At the beginning of this assignment I discussed how I was traveling to look at be aftering a lesson in the scientific discipline course of study. I planned a lesson and utilizing the Hagiographas of assorted theoreticians the lesson was planned with cardinal characteristics remembered. I besides looked at how there are differing positions on the scientific discipline course of study subdivisions and besides the usage of PowerPoint/ ICT in the schoolroom. I besides evaluated the lesson I taught and looked at the jobs that I faced and so how they were overcome. From this I found three cardinal facets that I need to retrieve when be aftering future lessons. When be aftering to utilize ICT in the lesson I did happen it difficult to believe of an ICT constituent to utilize, so I decided to research some. Upon researching I did come across many theoreticians who did non favor utilizing ICT in scientific discipline, which did alarm me as to if there was traveling to be any benefits in utilizing ICT. However this encouraged me to make farther research and I did happen a batch of theoreticians who supported the usage of ICT. Upon composing and researching this assignment I feel as if I have gained more understanding of composing lesson programs. I have gained cognition of theoreticians contrasting positions and I have besides gained more whole category learning experience.
